Menstrual Cups – Are They Safe Or Not?

Menstrual Cups Are Safe or Not

As far as the medical community is concerned , menstrual cups are considered safe. There are some risks associated with the use of these cups, but if you use them in the recommended way, chances are that nothing will go wrong. Women usually use pads and tampons during their menstrual cycle.

But over the past few years, these cups have grown in popularity because they are better when it comes to preventing leakage. For those who don’t know, menstrual cups are bell-shaped, and they are inserted inside the vagina where the blood is collected instead of being absorbed. This is the reason why the chances of blood leakage are less with cups.

Now, if you search the internet regarding the safety of menstrual cups, you will see that the audience is divided. Some people say that these cups are totally hygienic and then there’s the audience that claims that these cups are dangerous and shouldn’t be used.

There is no need for concern when using a menstrual cup. As said earlier, the medical community considers these cups safe. Nevertheless, there are some risks associated, and we are now going to talk about those risks.

1-Irritation

You need to lubricate your vagina where you have to insert the cup because if you don’t, it can cause some serious discomfort that can then lead to irritation. This is the reason why some women out there don’t like the idea of using menstrual cups. What you need to do is to apply some water-based lube outside the cup and then try inserting in. This really helps, and it eliminates all the irritation.

2-Infection

It’s rare, but it’s possible! Infection usually occurs when there’s bacteria on your hands that gets passed on the cup which you have to insert. For example, you can develop yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis is the bacteria is strong. To prevent this issue what you need to do is to wash your hands and make sure that the cup is clean too. Once you are sure that there’s no bacteria on your hands, the cup is then safe to use.

3-TSS

TSS is an abbreviation for Toxic Shock Syndrome, which is a rare complication that is a result of a serious bacterial infection. The Staphylococcus or Streptococcus bacteria is usually found on your skin and your nose. When this bacteria travels to your vagina and goes deep inside, that’s when TSS happens.

TSS is more common with tampons, and it happens only when you leave the tampon inside your body for too long. As far as the menstrual cups are concerned, well, you should leave them in your body either if you really don’t want to develop TSS.

Final Thoughts

These are some risks that come along menstrual cups, but as you can see, it’s just the bacteria that causes all the problem. So, if you try and keep your hands and the cup clean, you will be able to keep yourself safe from such risks, and you can then easily use menstrual cups without worrying about anything.
