German Muslim MPs vote in favour of same-sex marriage. It is a highly surprising and unexpected action. The Muslim MPs who voted in favour are six in number. Recently, Angela Markel, faced a lot of criticism for saying that marriage is between a man and a woman. She opposed the “same-sex marriage” bill.
The drop in her popularity and approval ratings is also attributed to her stance on this issue. Even when the Chancellor opposed the bill, it was still approved in Parliament by 393-226 votes. Despite her liberal values, Merkel has openly talked against same-sex marriage. During the vote, she cast her vote as ‘No’. During a session with the reporters, she said:
“For me, marriage in the Constitution is marriage between a man and a woman and that is why I did not vote in favor of this bill today”.
On its approval, MPs rose to their feet and gave a standing ovation for this historical step being taken for the LGBT community of Germany. After the approval, rainbow confetti was launched inside the chamber by the Green Party, to which the six Muslim lawmakers are affiliated to. Filipe Henriques, an activist, tweeted,
“Merkel thinks marriage is a sacred bond between men and woman. Most Germans and all Muslim MPs believe in equality. Who needs integration?”
Almost all of the neighbouring countries support gay marriage. It is why the German government was also being pressurized to drop the resistance and approve same-sex marriage. The first country that legalized same-sex marriage was the Netherlands. After that, all the rest of the countries like Canada, Norway, Belgium, Spain, Denmark and even Iceland legalized it too. Gay couples are now can adopt children as well after the approval of the bill.
Final Thoughts
But the only shocking thing is the approval of the German Muslim MPs which no one saw coming. What’s your take on this matter given Islamic teachings on homosexuality? Make sure to let your opinions be known in the comments!
